If the results were uncontroversial and if Najib had led BN to regain the two-thirds majority, LHL would have congratulated him before sunrise. Our side must have deliberated and hesitated on what to do. In the end the best response is to delay our congratulations.
Najib might not be PM for long.
Now in 2013 unlike 2008, BN clumsy corruption, more significant for its stupidity than anything else there is plenty of evidence of electoral fraud. I could pick and choose what to feature in my earlier blog posts. BN will get away by being shameless. After 56 years, you own the civil service. Does not matter that on paper they are supposed to be independent.
I am watching how BN will rule without the requisite moral authority. If people are angrier than I have noticed, there could be civil disobedience on top of street protests, but what do I know about Malaysian politics, I am also learning.
Update: 3:45pm
Good grief, the Malaysians are even going to President Obama. An indication of how hopeless they are feeling now. What a crying shame that this is happening. Doesn't look they even want to try appealing to their Agong?
Update: 4:35pm
Very slow indeed. Beside LHL, at this point in time, only Cambodia's Hun Sen has sent his congratulations to Najib. A clear signal of how other nations are viewing BN purported win in this elections.
Update: May 7: 5:50am
Slowly more congratulations have come in for Najib.
Philippines, Indonesia and Kazakhstan.
Still no signs from Japan, China, USA, South Korea and the UK...everyone knows about Bersih yeah? So they are not in a hurry but eventually they will come.
Birds of same feather flock together. Why is our leaders so earnest to congratulate their win when there are clear and blatant unresolved fraud issues to be contested?!?
ReplyDelete4 states were won by PR in Kedah, Perlis, Perak, Terranganu before the recount + blackout..they would be stupid to concede!! How come a government claim victory on such shameless and shallow grounds?! This is what our leaders endorse?

Hi Peng You,
ReplyDeleteI think you've uncharateristically "gone over the edge" on this one. Malaysia netizens gave gotten carried away by the notion that the wind is behind their back for a change in govt. Somehow, this has permeated into Sgp blogosphere as well. They should take a deep breath - for want of a better word, "grow up".
Firstly, BN won 60% of seats despite winning only 49% of botes (Pakatan won majority, 50%). Source : http://dinmerican.wordpress.com/2013/05/06/54792/. For all the hue and cry, this popular vote result is very close to the polls, isn't it, which showed 50/50.
Netizens are crying foul and crying on the sleeves of Obama. Its unfair, one man one vote, we won majority, we should form govt. BN played dirty - gerrymendering, money politics, control of media ..
Hello?? PAP won 60% of votes and had 90% seats in Parliament. Arguably, Sgp has the most deskewed Parliament representation vs popular votes, among all countries on earth. The gap is 30% - in Msia its 10% and even in the USA, its 6% (see below). In other words, thanks to the GRC, Sgp is the most gerry-mendered country on earth!! And lets not talk about control of media, Peoples Association, etc. In M'sia, those attending rallies are given free kenduri. In PAP rallies, those attending (or rather, bussed in to attend) are given packet drinks, chicken rice etc.
Look at the USA - in 2012 elections for House of Representatives seats, Democrats won 49% of votes vs 48% for Republicans, but the Republicans retained control of the House with 54% of seats (Source : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_House_of_Representatives_elections,_2012). Reason : Gerry mendering. Click here to see some pictures of gerrymandered districts : http://www.theatlantic.com/daily-dish/archive/2010/11/gerrymandering-gone-wild/180328/
And Republicans cry foul that the Democrats are getting away with murder too. In some states in the USA, same day voter registration is allowed and all you need is a driving license. You can easily see how this can be abused. Its alleged that "phantom voters" (especially minorities) beef up the numbers for Democrats. Similarly, the Democrats allege Republicans suppress voters turnout. Look at the long hours (>5 hours) voters in heavy non-white precincts have to queue to vote in some Florida polling stations.
In other words, netizens need to "grow up". What a disgrace to respond to the election results by crying on Obama's shoulders.
Is the fact that rural votes will have a disproportionate seat representation in Parliament known before the polls? Yes, everyone knows it. Is it fair? Many say no, but I hold a different view. But its irrelevant. Knowing the rules, target your campaign to gain more of the rural votes then, so as to ensure you form the Govt.
Its no different from Sgp or USA. Obama accepts that the electoral college situation means he has to campaign in swing states, not just get as much votes as possible in NY or California. Opposition parties in Sgp know they need to win over GRCs, regardless of the handicap.
And there's something to be said here for how netizens can sometimes be myopic. What makes them think the winds of change is that strong? Who are the netizens anyway? Urban, educated folks - with a big chunk being Chinese. Look at the actual voting results - yes, the chinese and urban swing to PR but the rural Malays swing towards BN.
Bottomline is this : Yes, politics is a dirty game but when you only have 50/50 support and you know the rules favor rural representation in the first place, then you only got yourself to blame for not trying hard enough or running a good enough, broad enough, campaign.
JG, at least keep those comments to yourself if you are not empathic. Try conceding to the guy who came to your house and said its his. You are blind to the concrete evidence. The list is endless and I shan't waste time describing to you. The people's will has been trampled and the name of democracy is being defiled. Think of going for online petitions as a display of desperation by the Malaysians. Their own "government" is betraying them, who else can they turn to?
DeleteYou will never understand the emotions involved, as you are living in a comfortable shell. Otherwise you are just one of BN's cronies.
