Haze: Angry Indonesia burning more?

437 hotspots, almost double the number from yesterday. They are going to tell us if not for their valiant efforts there would be even far more hotspots? Or could it be that they want to teach us a lesson. Now that is the ignorant side of me writing. I could start with this question and then go and investigate but for now I ought to leave it to the informed and experts to advise us. I am leaving this note here to revisit if nobody pick up this task to explain why. It's important as it suggest what sort of behavior we could get from the Indonesians next time.

Update: 10:00pm

President SBY has apologized. Netizens have been quick so show generosity. Here are the top two thus far.

I don't know what to make of his apology. Between an apology and solving the problem, any of us will choose the latter. As Shanmugam said, we weren't looking for an apology.

Now will they have the humility to accept our help? Otherwise this is just a charade bearing in mind the number of hotspots have doubled in a day.

And please SBY, don't urge on us this relatives thingy. They are not appropriate for modern state to state relations especially relatives mean you are the parent and we the kids. No deal.

This apology will be front page news tomorrow but if ST has any sense, I hope not. No need to lose even more face. Just trying to be magnanimous to their culture. We still have to get along.

Update: June 25, 5:45am

Just watch President SBY apologized. This is a statesman which unfortunately is not complemented by mature and wise ministers. Some will continue to act against us and the interest of Indonesians for their own and cronies ends. Indonesia is such a big place, what can just one and a small bunch do. We better be prepared for the eventuality of sometime a fool becoming President. SBY leaves office next year.

Update: June 25 6:40am

They are the pros, doing this with more finesse than I could. I suggested in an earlier update that ST should not put SBY apology on the front. In my inexperience I could only think of his picture the first thing you see in our papers. A no-no. Imagine we have a free wheeling press trying to out do each other. We will have a problem. Nevertheless we must keep growing press freedom here but with wisdom.

They have left it to the man on the ground to write this. The picture used is Petronas Twin Towers, not MBS or MBFC etc., and most important SBY picture is not used. You see, we have been as sensitive and intelligent as possible toward them. Just forget about this we are relatives thingy. Go back to basics again. With relatives like your ministers we have no need for enemies.

Some explanation I gathered from the ST today.

  1. When the haze hit Malaysia in 1997, it was reported that 10,000 people were sick and visited the doctors/clinics for haze-related health issues.

This time, BBC World presenter Rico Hizon says taxi drivers in Singapore are reporting an increase in the number of passengers going to hospital.
But the MSM or MOH have been very quiet about the situation here. Do people have any indications of the real numbers thus far? We have friends and children/nieces/neighbors who have reported sick, sore throat, cough with phlegms, bleeding noses, asmathic attacks etc..but no one has the final figures. I suspect the number is not light.
