Out of your mind: Older workers ok to less pay

Took me a whole day to decide if I should write up on this one. My knee jerk reaction was ST must be out of its blinking mind to have such a headline. Well they managed to find some, probably not through their effort but NTUC, older workers who really do not mind less pay. But they forgot that many readers will be outraged by this. At least that is what I discover throughout the day on Facebook.

I can easily imagine many older workers settling for lower pay as the alternative to no pay. To say it is OK is a stretch. To resign to such a situation and learning to be contented and even happy about it is their way of coping. Already they have lived most of their lives, why be miserable. It is a positive and resilient spirit but our leaders shouldn't be surprised if they suddenly change their mind down the road. Especially when opinion makers seize the platforms and persuade them that they have been short changed (I am not sure this is fact) and they should demand better.

In mitigation to ST inane headline, at least they quoted some workers who pointed out that they ought to be doing less work if they are paid less.

  1. Statistics, statistics, damned lies. Whoever surveyed this - you are welcomed to believe!! Imagine working at a hardly sustainable pay and doing jobs that glamourise you have the experience and thus you have to contribute - in the end, just changing diapers for pampered young workers and money-making bosses. The poor just get poorer, the middle class gets poorer .... this is "new life" No wonder there are bosses who even offer to cut one's salary by fifty per cent even before one crosses the 60-year mark.
