Cyclist Deaths

My main peeve with cyclists on our roads. This is printed in the ST yesterday. Don't they know it is not worth getting hurt colliding with other road vehicles? There are always some drivers who just let their emotions get the better of them and then we have another fatal statistic.

The most unfortunate death of Freddy Khoo has triggered a strong response from cyclists. I believe we should do better and may be at last the lone voice of MP Irene Ng would be heeded.

I quit cycling on our roads long ago. Simply not worth the risk.

I am afraid there will be more cyclists deaths. There are no neater solution than everyone doing their part but sadly and sometimes tragically it isn't happening.

As we become richer, each of us demand a larger space with scant regard for others. Cyclists pressure groups are trying to coerce the government to legislate in their favor. Animal rights groups are even more vociferous and determined than them and I am sure many others will appear. Collisions physical or otherwise are inevitable in our cramped society. I am watching if the government show courage and leadership. The majority of us aren't cyclists and we are mostly silent on this issue. It takes a lot of skill and empathy to hear through our quiet.

Update: 8:20pm

The Dutch showed courage and looked at what they have gotten today.

  1. Cyclist should pay road tax, COE and ERP to be entitled the same rights!

  2. Some suggestions:

    1. Cyclist should pay road tax, COE and ERP to be entitled the same rights! Cyclist endanger other road users and free load off the use of roads which are money paid by other road users.

    2. They should be subject to basic, advanced theory and practical tests for cyclists who wish to go on the main road as well.

    3. Bikes with proper safety markings and registration by allowed to go on the road.

Without payment, they should be relegated to minor roads and perhaps pedestrian paths where they should be treated like one. Our Basic and Advanced theory does not include cyclists, so for the interest of safety, they should be riding on pedestrian paths. For pedestrian safety, that's another issue for another day...

    Freddy... RIP.

  3. Cyclists are no angels, it's not hard to see errant cyclists on the road who have no regard for their own safety nor that of other road users
