Parallels between Singapore and China

I am only interested in this long article for its parallels to Singapore.

The story began with the outstanding achievements China had made under Hu and Wen. They are far more impressive than Singapore had achieved over the same period.

Then the story turned to the failures and misses. Again they were more glaring than those of the PAP government here. For all the visible success of the PAP government it received the lowest support ever. Similarly since the reopening of China under Deng, the Chinese had never been as unhappy.

What does all these tell us? We must bear in mind that leaders are rarely stronger than the currents that carry us along through space and time. So before pundits go running extolling the superiority of Chinese leaders bear in mind what we have repeatedly learned in financial markets: do not confuse genius with the bull market.

Genius leaders reverse the tides or perhaps separate the waters. Such leaders are in recession these days. Therefore forget abut the leaders and adapt accordingly to the currents of our times. In a visceral way, growing NIMBYism is an unfortunate result of adapting to change. Along with that is the rising decibel of various interest groups promoting their exclusive agendas. We stopped listening to our leaders and turn inward to ourselves, often pandering only to our narrow interests since we fail to see beyond. Worse, some elevate their priorities above others without bothering about legitimacy or concern for others.

To all and sundry, the Titanic was ably captained until it hit an ice berg. The mistakes leaders make often show up much later. Often it is the result of complacency but for above average leaders like ours and China, these are usually not for lacking intelligence or lapses of judgement, but courage. Hu and Wen epithets were cautious men. Over here our leaders call themselves steady hands. I would have preferred adroit hands.

  1. Christ works in Communist China

"Today when Christ does the work in the country of the great red dragon,Communist China,, that is, does his work among the Gentile nations, he is still doing the work on all mankind. Israel could be the beachhead of his work on earth. Likewise, China can be the beachhead of his work among the Gentile nations. Hasn’t this word, “Jehovah’s name will be great among the Gentile nations” been fulfilled today? The initial step of the work done among the Gentile nations is this work done in the country of the great red dragon. It is especially contrary to people’s notions that God is incarnated to do the work in this land and do it on these cursed people. These people are the most debased and have no status. They all were rejected by Jehovah in the beginning. If people are rejected by others, it may not mean much. If they are rejected by God, it means that they have no position at all and have the lowest status. As a created being, if you are occupied by satan or rejected by others, it is a painful thing to you. But if a created being is rejected by the Creator, it means that he has the lowest position. The descendants of Moab are the cursed and were born in this backward country. No doubt they are a kind of people with the lowest position under the power and influence of darkness. Because these people had the lowest position before, the work done on them is most contrary to people’s notions and is most beneficial to the entire six-thousand-year management plan. Doing the work on these people can most effectively break people’s notions. Through this, the age is opened; through this, people’s notions are all broken; and through this, the work of the entire Age of the Grace is concluded. At the beginning, the work was done in Judea, within the area of Israel, and no work of opening an age was done among the Gentile nations. The work at the last stage is not only done on the Gentiles, but even on the cursed ones. This is the evidence that can shame satan most. Thus, God “becomes” the God of all created beings throughout the universe and becomes the Lord of all things and the object of worship of all living things."
