The PAT awards have shifted from recognizing inspiring teachers to pedagogical innovators. Lacking the human interest story, the ST had not given it much prominence yesterday.
I believe the ST closely associated with our schools through encouraging English Language learning and the Pocket Money Fund try to make up to teachers with stories like this one today.
Teaching is becoming more professional and less a calling - I think social work is heading that way too. I bet many teachers are more excited abut the pay hike they are getting from this month onward than the soul satisfaction they could get from the work of repairing and building lives. The teachers profiled here are the uncommon ones. Kudos to them.
I think they should scrap the Caring Teachers Award and give such teachers the Presidential recognition instead. Other awards for teaching excellence can be created.
