Economist: Why so few babies?

From the current issue of the Economist.

In short nobody really knows the reason why or at least you will never find enough people to agree on one single reason and hence solution to the problem.

The article tells a story sticking as closely to Science as possible how we got here - couples not having babies. Makes you wonder if the story is correct even.

Views of the philosophers or theologians weren't sought for this article. If you asked the late Mother Teresa, she would probably give you an incredulous look and go on to lecture you about the poverty of love as evidenced in rising abortion rates.

My pet theory is that unlike before people no longer view children as their pension. Sure not all parents see it that way but enough do to make show up in low fertility rates across the rich world.
