John Piper's book: The life of the Mind and the Love of God

So I have been attracted to reading this John Piper's book as far back as January. See how useful this blog is! Well, I just finished it. I was underwhelmed. Of course you use your head to read the Bible. How else are you suppose to do it.

This time Piper seems to be trapped in the intellectual traditions of his civilization forgetting that the Bible was written against a very different cultural background. So many possibilities are missed as a result when you forced ideas into categories and try to discover their relationships.

This book could have led me to a gem though. Piper highly recommend, "How to Read a Book" by Mortimer Adler.

  1. We are a not-for-profit educational organization, founded by Mortimer Adler and we have recently made an exciting discovery--three years after writing the wonderfully expanded third edition of How to Read a Book, Mortimer Adler and Charles Van Doren made a series of thirteen 14-minute videos--lively discussing the art of reading. The videos were produced by Encyclopaedia Britannica. For reasons unknown, sometime after their original publication, these videos were lost.

Three hours with Mortimer Adler on one DVD. A must for libraries and classroom teaching the art of reading.

I cannot exaggerate how instructive these programs are--we are so sure that you will agree, if you are not completely satisfied, we will refund your donation.
