Small steps for enduring change
You want to change society, the most enduring change comes from many accumulated small steps and often in a zigzag manner. So here with has a short three minute clip with an underlying message that there are many ways to success and fulfillment beyond academic scores.
How many people realize that if there is a narrow or worse one definition of success the outcome is a short lived Singapore? What we need is an ecosystem of varied success pollinating each other and fertilizing to create and innovate. Instead of envying the few successful ones we celebrate a diversity of success. Instead of comparing and mostly coming up short we respect and enjoy each other effort and produce. When I look at the young I feel hopeful for them. They are more open-minded and happy to experiment. When I look at the old I hope unlike elsewhere they will not thwart and shortchange the young because what the late Peter Drucker warned about the tyranny of the old is now very real when you survey the ageing developed economies.
Governments and politicians by structure and habit tend to be short term and feel the pressure to achieve quick results because of the few years long electoral cycle. Therefore policy changes often take a big bang approach which is very disruptive. I hope they are able to resist such pressures but whether they can depend very much on their ability to sell their ideas. The people are always ready to buy them and we have not become mad like many electorates across the world who bought fake news, conspiracy theories and free lunches.
Nothing is permanent and it is always easy to produce a generation with no iron in them because children are not born with steel inside. They must be nurtured and taught. I am heartened by our resolve not to wilt in the face of Chinese pressure. In fact to have others try to bully or test us these are necessary to make us strong. Who is that coward who suggest we ought to be apologizing to the Chinese and Americans? Shame of you!
Mary Hopkin "For All My Days"
FOR ALL MY DAYS
From the film "Kidnapped"
(Jack Fishman / Roy Budd)
Recorded by:
Roy Budd; Mary Hopkin.
For all my days in many ways
I'll think of all I've lived to see
The mountains high, clouds in the sky
I thank the Lord for sharing them with me
The summer's glow, the winter's snow
Are not to me just scenery
When tree tops sway I long to say
Oh thank you Lord for sharing them with me
Life I believe, love we receive
We shouldn't take too casually
For all my days in many ways
I'll thank the Lord for sharing them with me
and all because I rediscover "Those were the days" Very popular when I was kid and struggling with English.
Xi to the 硬派: You make us look ridiculous
HK customs consulting with their Chinese masters and struggling to come up with a good reason for detaining our Terrex vehicles. That is what happens when ideology clashed with the pragmatic good: the ideologue and prejudiced party look ridiculous. Well since China is so big and strong they are more likely to be seen as a bully than stupid. Power gives you the wherewithal to get away with stupid policies which is what is going to come out of Trump's America.
Bullying is hard power and it only works with the morally weak and compromised, and only up to a point. To advance your agenda you need soft power and the Chinese has been inflicting self damage from being pushy over the South China Sea. Unfortunately this is damage Xi Jiping's party has to accept from the ideological 硬派 in a complex game of competing and collaborating priorities. The media cannot successfully dissect the interconnections and so fail to explain to readers the true picture. In fact it regularly reduce what is highly complex into a sports metaphor of winning and losing in serial games. Might as well get the sports editor to stand in for the foreign editor eh? Well to be fair I am not making this clear enough either but that is the privilege of blogging for myself.
Eventually the Chinese will come up with some face saving way resolve this which we would quietly accept. Again the 硬派 would have relearned the lesson they keep failing that we cannot be bullied. At the end of the day keeping our armored vehicles for a while only serve to tell the world how the second biggest bully tried and failed to scare one of the smallest states in the world. Any other middling nations thinking they can pull a fast one of us would surely give up the idea.
The Abuse of Twitter: First America, now India
Trump has given ideas to many bad hats how to abuse Twitter. The infection has traveled to India Tata. This is taking Twitter far away from the original design of its founders isn't it? 140 characters per message is the fool's way to create misunderstanding and sowing all sorts of trouble. Who knows the next war might actually be caused by tweeting.
I watched in dismay how Trump dumbed down complex issues with tweets. This is a like a horror story made popular in the movies when two parts need to find each other in order to unleash hell. The latest incarnation of this plot line was in the last Star Trek movie: Beyond. The gullible folks found Trump or more accurately Trump found them. Together they will unwittingly attempt to destroy the world eh? I hope I have been too dramatic.
I am amazed at Obama's faith in the US Constitution and values of inclusiveness. Grasping for faith I told my ex-boss, after Star Wars comes the Empire Strikes Back and now we must get to the Return of the Jedi.
I would not be sad if Jack Dorsey figures a way to shut down Twitter. Good that nobody wants to buy it.

The most un-American President
We take our flag probably more seriously than any other democratic government. For Trump to say that is a most un-American thing. The only government who can beat him to that on the downside is Kim Jong-Un. He will execute you for burning the DPRK flag.
Those who imagine Trump would have a successful presidency are in denial. His out of control temperament practically guarantee not if but when Congress will impeach him. Don't even need to dig up his many conflict of interests to do that.
Just wait. I hope he is kicked out before he launches a nuclear war. My worry is that Congress is full of feckless and vile Republicans. Show us you have got the bollocks to do what is right.
When the silent majority who failed to turn up to vote against Trump gets a lot more motivated than on November 8 are roused then Trump is finished. Before that it is hard to imagine Congress acting. On this I hope I am wrong.
Feels a lot safer with Pence moving from VP to P.

Terrex issue: Zaobao better than EL media
ST and the rest of the EL media have been carrying this story of our Terrexes stuck in HK customs but not Zaobao on their front page. This shows Zaobao understand this issue better than the EL media especially when you consider the CL version of Global Times is much more accessible to CL readers here, the pressure is greater.
People have been messaging me about how the Chinese continue to bully us. We can't stop anyone from trying but we can choose how to respond. We already show them our One-China policy is larger and deeper than their reading of this core interest. If we did not "play both sides" we would have been far less useful. That was why Xi jinping and Ma Yingjeou could not find a better place to meet each other than here.
Most likely we have become the beating boy of some internal power play among their leaders. This will boil over as long as we manage this shrewdly. This is just a small irritation compared to the damage we had to lived with when we caned Michael Fay.
What Singapore needs to always is the ability to stick around long enough to show they we were right. To do that we need to stay strong always. After several years, President Clinton publicly admitted we did the right thing with Fay.
Update: 8:05 pm
China acting silly. This is not for the professionals but the ignorant masses. It will be awhile before the average guy learns to distinguish false news. During the transition or learning period everyone is most at risk.
