An Apology to Feng Tianwei?

Well written blog post. A good rebuttal to the very smart and often insightful Lucky Tan comment on this topic which an old colleague pointed out to me yesterday.

The Wisdom of the Crowds is rare. More often you get their madness instead.

Feng Tianwei is a tangible visible bogeyman for the government detractors. She is visible and small enough especially when compared to the large and powerful government.

I recently read a book on antisemitism and understand better that it is natural for people to behave this way. Everywhere Billy Graham or the Dalai Lama went they reminded people that at the core we are more similar than different. Just because Singapore society is successful we have forgotten that it was once thought impossible. Just because we have successfully painted over the fault lines of race, language and religion; we thought they have cemented them. Nothing can be further from the truth. They will be with us till the end of our specie.

I am agnostic about the government sports talent policy because I don't spend enough time learning about it, but rightly or wrongly once we have taken these star sportsmen in, for all our sake, let's treat them well. A caring and supportive response from us is an unappreciated margin of safety against our fault lines developing into cracks.
